What makes an award winning hop? Is it the terroir? The climate and conditions in which the hop is grown in, or is it the people whose hard work year on year make sure the hops are protected from pests and disease?
Whatever it is it’s nice to know you’re doing it right, and what better way to celebrate this achievement than with an awards ceremony, just like the Oscars.
So on February 9th 2018 we will be attending the IBD British Hop Competition at the Hook Norton Brewery, where our hops have been rubbed and sniffed by master brewers and other industry professionals alike to find out which hops will take the awards. With Categories such as High Aroma Intensity and Strong Aroma intensity we should be in with a shout.
With the judges keen to highlight that their decisions are made on their abilities first and foremost as brewers and that their selection of winning samples is based upon a number of criteria including:-
- Trueness to variety type
- Quality and intensity of aroma
- Disease and pest free
- Presentation of sample
Or put more simply, the hop sample in each category that they would most want to use to brew their own beers.
