How to Dry Hops for Decoration: The Effortless Guide to “drying” your Hop Garlands

There is something undeniably evocative about the sight of lush, green hops draped over a rustic timber beam. It’s that timeless charm of the English countryside. Whether you call them hop vines or, as we technically do on the farm, hop bines, these botanical beauties have become the “must-have” accessory for anyone looking to infuse their home with a touch of natural luxury.

But a question we often hear at Hukins Hops is: “How do I dry them?”

The internet is full of complex tutorials involving drying racks, dehumidifiers, and precise temperature controls. It sounds like a lot of blood, sweat, and determination just to get a bit of greenery on your mantlepiece. Well, we have a secret for you. The “drying” part is actually the easiest job you’ll do all year. In fact, it requires exactly zero effort.

There is also a common misconception that if you want a hop garland to last for a year or more, you must buy it already dried. While our dried garlands are spectacular, fresh hop garlands are the unsung heroes of the hop world and by far our most popular choice.

The “Best of Both Worlds”: Our Fresh Hop Garlands

If you are lucky enough to catch our harvest season, our fresh hop garlands are the ultimate “best of both worlds” solution.

When they arrive at your door, they are vibrant, supple, and heavy with the scent of the hop garden. Because they are fresh, they are incredibly easy to manipulate. You can wind them around a banister, drape them over a kitchen island, or frame a doorway with ease. They aren’t brittle; they are alive with the essence of the farm.

Now, here is the magic part. You don’t need to do a thing to dry them. The only thing you need to ensure is that you hang them on the day you receive them – DO NOT leave them in the box!

Simply hang them “in situ”: which is a fancy way of saying “exactly where you want them to live”: and let nature take its course. Because our hops are grown with generations of expertise, they are sturdy enough to dry naturally in the air of your home. They will slowly transition from a deep, juicy green to a sophisticated, sage green over the course of a few weeks. No special techniques, no drying racks, and absolutely no stress. They will then last just as long as our dried hop garlands.

The Traditional: Our Dried Hop Garlands

Of course, we understand that not everyone wants watch a plant dry! Sometimes, you need that refined, rustic look with the sage greens right now. This is where our dried hop garlands come into their own.

Our dried hop garlands arrive at your home already dried within our Oast kilns, finished, and ready to hang immediately.

Because they’re dried, they can be more delicate and brittle than fresh bines, so do handle them gently when unpacking and hanging. Move slowly, support the garland as you lift it out, and avoid tugging at the cones. A little care in those first few minutes keeps the garland looking exquisite.

The main takeaway? Once your dried hop garland is in place, there is absolutely no upkeep required— a dried hop garland is a true “set and forget” piece of art: refined, static, and quietly sublime.

Our customer created this with one of our Prepared Dried Hop Garlands.
