Hop Garlands – Frequently Asked Questions
What are hop garlands?
Hop garlands are lengths of natural hop bines/vines (the climbing stems of the hop plant) that have been hand harvested and arranged for decorative use. Traditionally grown in Kent, hop garlands are used in homes, pubs, weddings, and events for their rustic, organic appearance.
What are hop garlands used for?
Hop garlands are commonly used for:
- Fireplace and mantel decoration: The classic “English Country House” look”
- Wedding/Event décor (arches, beams, table runners): Perfect for beams, arches, and floral installations.
- Pub and bar interiors: Adding instant character and tradition to any interior.
- Seasonal or rustic home styling: A unique, natural focal point for any room.
They are especially popular in the UK due to their connection with traditional hop growing. They are also known to bring good luck!
Are your hop garlands fresh or dried?
We offer both! Our Fresh Hop Garlands are a seasonal highlight available in August and September. Our Dried Hop Garlands are carefully preserved to provide that iconic rustic charm all year round.
How long do hop garlands last?
Fresh and Dried Hop Garlands typically last:
- Approx. 12 months indoors in good condition
- Longer if kept dry and out of direct sunlight
Over time, they may become more brittle and fade slightly in colour. After approx. 12 months do not worry, they will not combust! However, they will just have turned a more golden/brown colour and be more fragile/dry. Some of our customers like that appearance and keep them up for longer than a year (we have had some customers have them up over 3 years!).
Do hop garlands shed or make a mess?
Yes, hop garlands can be fragile and may shed small pieces (such as leaves or hop petals), especially when handled frequently. Once positioned, they should be left undisturbed to minimise shedding. Dried hop garlands are a lot more fragile to work with – think of it like fresh and dried flowers!
We recommend popping down some sheets to collect any leaves/hop petals that may fall off.
Once they are in place, we recommend leaving them undisturbed to minimize shedding.
Pro Tip: Our “Prepared Garlands” are florist-finished to be more robust and ready-to-hang with minimal effort.
How should I store hop garlands?
Fresh Hop garlands should be hung as soon as they arrive, they can not be left in the box.
Dried Hop garlands can be stored in their box, if necessary, but they must be stored in a cool/dry place, avoiding any damp or humid conditions and be kept away from direct sunlight. However, we do not recommend this and you should contact our hop florist, Louisa, for advice as we may be able to store them for you until you require them.
Can hop garlands be used outdoors?
Hop garlands are best suited for indoor use. Outdoors, exposure to moisture, direct sunlight and wind etc. will significantly reduce their lifespan and may cause rapid deterioration.
What length are hop garlands available in?
Hop garlands are a natural product, so we do not have much control over their length. We have three products offering various lengths:
- Mini Garlands – approx. 1-1.5m (this are also a lot slimmer)
- Hop Garlands – approx. 2.5m, they do taper one end
- Prepared Hop Garlands – approx. 1.5m, these are our fullest garlands and they will be full throughout the entire length.
Can I cut or shape a hop garland?
Yes, hop garlands can be cut or adjusted to suit your space. However, they should be handled carefully as dried bines can be brittle. Therefore, if you feel you require a lot of adjustment then we would recommend our Fresh Hop Garlands, as these will be easier to cut/work with to get your desired shape.
Pro Tip: Our “Prepared Garlands” are florist-finished to be more robust and ready-to-hang with minimal effort.
Are hop garlands suitable for weddings?

Yes, hop garlands are very popular for weddings, particularly for:
- Rustic or countryside themes
- Barn venues
- Floral installations
- Table and beam decorations
They provide a natural, textured look that complements other greenery and flower
Do hop garlands have a scent?
Dried hop garlands may retain a light, natural aroma. Our Fresh Hop Garlands can have a strong, natural aroma when they first arrive, but as they dry this scent fades over time to a light, natural aroma.

They can also be upcycled and used to create beautiful wreaths! Find out more about this gorgeous creation in our blog!
How are hop garlands delivered?
We take great care in our packaging. Each garland is loosely coiled in a large box to prevent crushing and is delivered ready for you to gently unpack and hang. The delivery company we use is DPD. If you enter your mobile number when you order then they will send you a text with a 1 hour time slot on the morning of your delivery.
Some natural variation and minor shedding during transit is normal.
Are all hop garlands the same?
No – and that’s the beauty of them! Each garland is a unique product of nature. There will be natural variations in density, color, and shape, making your piece one-of-a-kind.

Can I use hop garlands with other decorations?
Yes, they pair well with:
-Wooden or rustic décor elements
-Fairy lights
-Dried flowers
-Eucalyptus or foliage
Do hop garlands require maintenance?
Minimal maintenance is needed. Simply:
- Keep them dry – Hop garlands are natural, organic materials. Exposure to external elements (wind, rain, high humidity) or damp conditions will lead to rapid deterioration.
- Avoid excessive handling – Once positioned, garlands should remain undisturbed. Frequent handling will increase shedding and reduce the lifespan of the decoration.
Are hop garlands safe to use indoors?
As a natural product, they should be kept away from open flames and excessive heat sources.
