We often get asked “how are hops grown”. Farmers have varying ways on how to grow hops, but this is a brief look into how we grow them here at Hukins Hops.
We gather material from mature plants and take them to our greenhouse where we start the propagation process,. This consists of, taking cuttings from the material we gathered and firmly placing each cutting into a compostable jiffy. Each jiffy is then placed in a tray of compost and once that tray is filled with jiffy’s, they are then left to grow on our heated bench. We now closely monitor them to ensure the bench temperature is correct and our misters are providing adequate water when needed. Also, during this period, as the cuttings begin to grow, we monitor the plant health e.g., removing any rotted leaves.
They stay in our greenhouse for around 6 weeks before we “harden” them off for a week or so and then they are ready to be planted outside to start their journey. Did you know that a hop plant can live for up to 30 years! Check out this quick video of how we plant them on…
