Hop Garlands Hukins Hops

Why buy a hop garland from Hukins Hops?

Our hop garlands are made from real hop bines grown, harvested and traditionally dried at Hukins Hops in Kent. For centuries, hop garlands have been used as natural decoration in pubs, homes and wedding venues, valued for their rich green colour, distinctive cones and long-lasting character. Each hop garland we supply is UK grown, carefully prepared and ready to hang as an authentic decorative feature.

Hop garlands bring a touch of timeless British tradition to any space, combining natural beauty with cultural heritage. These decorative treasures have adorned homes, pubs, and celebrations for centuries, offering both visual appeal and a subtle, calming aroma. At Hukins Hops, we cultivate premium hop garlands using traditional farming techniques passed down through generations, ensuring each garland delivers authentic charm and exceptional quality for your special occasions and home styling.

Hop garlands, also known as hop vines or hop bines, are decorative arrangements crafted from the climbing stems of hop plants (Humulus lupulus). While hops are famously known for their role in brewing beer, their lush vines and distinctive cone-shaped flowers make them equally prized for decoration.

These natural garlands feature the hop plant’s climbing stems adorned with their characteristic papery, cone-shaped flowers and lush foliage. Each garland is unique, showcasing the natural growth pattern of the hop plant with its thicker stem base and more abundant hop flowers toward the ends.

Traditionally hung in homes to bring good luck for the coming year, hop garlands have become increasingly popular for weddings, events, and interior styling, adding a touch of rustic elegance and British countryside charm to any setting.

Fresh hop garlands offer vibrant green colour and a distinctive aromatic quality. Harvested at peak freshness between mid-August and mid-September, these garlands bring the essence of the hop harvest directly to your event or home.

The bright, lively appearance makes fresh hop garlands particularly popular for summer and early autumn weddings, garden parties, and seasonal celebrations. Over time, these garlands will naturally dry in place, gradually transforming in colour and texture while maintaining their decorative appeal.

Properly hanging your hop garland ensures it displays beautifully and lasts as long as possible. Follow these expert tips from Hukins Hops:

Buy Fresh Hop Garlands:

  • Unbox your garland immediately upon delivery—fresh hops should not remain in the box
  • Lay the garland on a clean surface and remove any fallen or unwanted leaves
  • Wear gloves and long sleeves when handling to avoid scratches
  • Use nails, hooks, or wire to secure the garland in your chosen location
  • Place dust sheets beneath the hanging area to catch any falling debris
  • Allow the garland to dry naturally in place—it will gradually transform over time

Buy Dried Hop Garlands:

  • Open the box upon delivery and hang as soon as possible
  • If the garland seems exceptionally dry, store it in a slightly damp place overnight before hanging
  • Handle with care as dried hops can be brittle—expect some debris
  • Secure firmly in place using appropriate fixtures
  • Trim any excess foliage as desired
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to preserve color longer

For prepared garlands (both fresh and dried), the process is even simpler—these ready-to-display options can be hung immediately with minimal preparation required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hop vines and hop bines the same as a hop garland?

Hop vines, hop bines, and hop garlands are related but distinct products.

  • Hop Vines/Bines: These terms are often used interchangeably, referring to the climbing stems of hop plants used primarily in brewing beer. “Bine” is technically correct for hops due to their climbing mechanism.
  • Hop Garlands: These are decorative arrangements made from dried hop bines, crafted into garlands for ornamental use in home décor, weddings, and events.

Hop garlands utilise the aesthetic qualities of hop bines but are specifically made for decoration.

When will I receive my hop garland?

All hop garlands are harvested fresh in September each year. The are growing throughout the rest of the year. You can select a preferred date for delivery when you pre-order your hop garlands online.

How do I contact you?

You can email louisa@hukins-hops.co.uk. Please note that late August and September is a very busy period so there may be a delay getting back to you. Rest assured, we will respond but please bear with us as we are often out harvesting hops during this time.

What colour will my hop garland be?

Green fresh hop vines are a vibrant bright fresh green colour whilst our kiln dried vines are a more reserved sage green. Both will stay green for up to 1 year, they will slowly turn a golden brown under lights.

When and how should I hang my hop garland?

Never leave your garland in its box for long periods. Fresh hop vines should be hung immediately upon arrival, similar to fresh flowers. Follow the instructions below for handling and hanging. Kiln-dried vines should also be opened and hung as soon as possible. If short-term storage is necessary, open the box and keep it in a cool, dry place. If the kiln-dried vine seems exceptionally dry, store it in a slightly damp place overnight to absorb some moisture before hanging.

Fresh hops are cut, boxed straight from the field, and sent via 24-hour courier to ensure maximum freshness.

Upon arrival, remove the garland from the box, lay it on a clean surface, and remove any fallen or unwanted leaves or stems. Hang it immediately in a disturbance-free area. These garlands can be wrapped around beams or columns and will dry in place. Do not leave them in the box. Wear gloves and long sleeves when handling to avoid scratches or irritation. Use nails, hooks, or wire for hanging, and cover the area with dust sheets to prevent pollen stains. Harmless bugs may appear but will disappear within a few days.
